I have been an ASSA member for the past two years, 2007 and
2008.
During my more than 33 years of flying I have been involved
with organising many club-level fly-ins and flying days. But
my main engagement with air shows happened in 2006 when the
EAA asked me to be their National Safety Officer. Later in
the year I also became EAA Chapter 322's safety officer.
It was Karl Jensen who introduced me to ASSA as he felt the
EAA needed to operate its events under the auspices of ASSA.
So I spent the year as Karl's ASSA understudy, involved with
the Krugersdorp and EAA air show activities (Convention and
Sun 'n Fun) as the gofer.
Apart from the EAA air show activities, I have also been
Safety Officer at the Heidelberg Flying Club's most
successful air show in 2008. Unbeknown to the organisers,
this event turned out to be a Class B air show. Luckily for
me, "Hosepipe" Hanekom was the air show director, so I had
someone experienced with which to chat and from whom to
learn even more.
I will continue with my EAA duties for 2009, and will be
available to help at air shows as ASSA needs.
I have CPL with GrIII instructor rating, and a total time
of GA flying of a bit over 1 900 hours.
