Bob and I are the only two Air Traffic Controllers in the country who hold valid licenses and ratings for Air Sports Events. Although many other controllers officiate at these events, most of them hold ATC licenses but not the Sports Events Rating.
I am currently employed with the SACAA as an Air Traffic Services Inspector having qualified as an ATC in 1973.
I wish to make myself available should you receive any enquiries or request for an ATC at any Air Show, Air Race, Fly In, etc. My last few events included the SAA Zebula Fly In, the Klerksdorp Air Show, the PTAR and Potchefstroom.
When I attend these events, I do so in both my private capacity as well as in my CAA capacity, (an Authorised Person of the CAA is on duty 24/7!). It is always advantageous having a CAA Inspector at these events.
Although I do not charge for my services I do have a few preconditions for making myself available at these events:
1) Transport to be paid for by the event organizers if the event is to be held outside 150km from JHB
2) Accommodation, meals and refreshments (non alcoholic), for two, (my wife assists me), during the event, to be paid for by the event organizers
3) If the event is a ‘day event’, I can usually handle it on my own. However, if the event is two or more days, I reserve the right to request further ATC assistance
4) The organizers must provide all the relevant technical equipment such as transceivers, basic met equipment, ‘control tower’ etc.
